Mission Statement
To thousands of San Francisco Bay Area residents living in poverty, justice is not an abstract ideal. It is food, shelter and protection. It is the difference between staying in poverty and getting out; between dependence and self-reliance. But without help, justice is often denied.
About This Cause
Bay Area Legal Aid assures fairness for all in the civil justice system, regardless of how much money you have. It provides access to meaningful legal help for people to protect their livelihoods, their health and their families. BayLegal makes it easier to access information; legal assistance or representation; and legal self-help centers – so people can know their rights. BayLegal is the only legal aid organization serving the entire San Francisco Bay Area – seven counties, 70 advocates, one mission: equal access to justice for all. We provide wrap-around legal assistance in areas of law that most significantly affect low income people’s self-sufficiency, including: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION; HEALTH CARE ACCESS; YOUTH JUSTICE; ECONOMIC SECURITY; HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION; and CONSUMER LAW. BayLegal is making an impact on our community... Each year, BayLegal provides FREE direct legal representation to thousands of families. Here is a sampling of what that meant for some of the poorest Bay Area residents last year: 8,000 women and children were enabled to escape domestic violence; 8,200 people were enabled to keep a roof over their heads; 4,500 people gained access health care and safety-net program benefits.
