Mission Statement
Lutheran Social Services responds when people are vulnerable because of homelessness, mental illness, drug addiction or disaster. Providing support services and compassionate guidance, we help individuals and families to stabilize their lives and become self-sufficient. LSS currently serves nearly 3000 clients in Sacramento, San Francisco, Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties. Our programs include money management services, case management in transitional and permanent supportive housing sites, case management and housing services for emancipated former foster care youth, disaster preparedness training, and long-term disaster response services in the event of a local disaster.
About This Cause
Lutheran Social Services has served homeless people and emancipating foster youth in Sacramento County for 48 years. We operate nine housing programs in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties, providing: Transitional housing for homeless families, individuals, and youth. Permanent supportive housing for disabled individuals, families, and youth emerging from foster care. Case management for individuals and families who are permanently housed. We have developed strategic community partnerships that encourage innovative development of services—including partnerships with property management companies, childcare providers, in-home therapy providers, and other continuum of care providers.. We also work with our clients on ways to better serve their needs. We are grateful to receive funding for these programs from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), The Transitional Housing Program Plus (THP-Plus), SHRA (Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency), and the Department of Human Assistance—as well as from our philanthropic partners in the community. In San Francisco, LSS currently provides two primary types of services – money management services for chronically homeless adults with special needs and case management services for adults, families and seniors living in supportive housing sites. The shared goal of LSS housing services and money management programs is to assist clients in living stable and productive lives by accessing and maintaining safe, adequate and stable housing. All of the people we serve share a common need for safe, affordable and stable housing. Our programs work towards that common goal. We understand that unless safe, affordable and stable housing is achieved, then other resources that support improved health and well being outcomes cannot be accessed in an optimum manner. Most of our clients also share a common history of long term poverty. For many of them this economic reality has also exacerbated serious mental and physical health issues The goal of LSS programs is to acknowledge each person’s level of functioning, empowering them to live as independently as possible. The “harm reduction” philosophy of service is complimentary to this goal.
