Mission Statement
Thomas Aquinas College is a four-year, co-educational liberal arts college located in Santa Paula, CA, approximately 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Our program is designed to guide students to the truth through rigorous discussion of the “Great Books” of Western civilization conducted under the light of the Catholic faith.
About This Cause
Our founding document, A Proposal for the Fulfillment of Catholic Liberal Education (1969), describes both the purpose of the College and the curriculum designed to achieve that purpose. The College’s founders believed in the power of the intellect to comprehend reality and to discover truth. They wanted to offer young people the insights of the finest minds in history about the nature of the world and the human condition. And they wanted their students to question, ponder and discuss these insights in small tutorials, fostering an active engagement on the part of the students in their own education. In 1971, Thomas Aquinas College – named for the great thinker who devoted his life to demonstrating the harmony of reason and faith – opened its doors with thirty-three students and four faculty members. These faculty members called themselves “tutors” to reflect their primary role of guiding students to understand the text for themselves. The true “teachers” at the College were the authors of the Great Books, including Aristotle, Euclid, Newton, Shakespeare, Einstein, the American Founding Fathers, St. Augustine and, of course, St. Thomas Aquinas. Today, our program continues just as the founders envisioned. In reading and discussing the Great Books, students ponder the meaning and purpose of their lives. They learn the virtues of justice and personal responsibility that will help them to become leaders in society. And they develop the skills in reasoned argument that will allow their voices to be heard.
