Mission Statement
Discovery Counseling Center is a nonprofit mental health clinic and training agency. We have been supporting the community for over 50 years through direct school based and clinic counseling services, both in person and telehealth. Our mission is to be the community’s leader in mental wellness by: Providing affordable, high quality and accessible counseling services and programs; Offering excellent and highly-regarded training for future mental health professionals; Creating greater awareness of the prevalence of mental wellness issues in our community and the importance of early treatment; Serving as the community’s advocate in securing adequate funding and resources for the treatment of mental wellness issues.
About This Cause
Discovery Counseling Center has been an integral part of the San Ramon Valley community for over 50 years, providing high quality, affordable mental health counseling in our Danville clinic, in our office in San Ramon, and in all 36 schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. The staff of Discovery includes 11 licensed therapists, 15 pre licensed therapists, and 36 counseling interns. Staff conducts over 8000 counseling sessions each year in the clinic and another 5000 sessions in our local schools. Our goal is to ensure that all in need have access to mental health services and that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay full fees. Over 70% of our clients qualify for financial assistance. Services Mental Health Counseling We provide affordable individual, couples, family, children and group counseling in times of crisis, emotional need and life transitions. Our counselors work to help resolve challenging and/or painful issues, including eating disorders, parenting issues, behavioral problems, grief and loss, anger and low self-esteem. School –Based Counseling Program (SCIP) Individual and group counseling is provided at all elementary, middle and high schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Our school counseling intervention program (SCIP) helps children address the development of social competence, gain problem-solving skills, and build self-esteem. In a partnership with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, up to 10 sessions with a counselor are offered at no cost to the student’s family. Alternative to Suspension Students caught at school in possession of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco are subject to an automatic three-day suspension. They may opt to reduce their suspension to two days if they agree to two sessions with a Discovery Counseling Center counselor. The first session is a drug and alcohol use assessment for the student and the second involves a meeting with the student and parents or guardians to discuss how behaviors can be changed. Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction for Teens Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Teens has been demonstrated through research to be an effective and evidence-based intervention to reduce adolescent stress and the physical and psychological problems that result. Teens often have difficulty with their relationships, emotions, confidence, procrastination, impulsivity and attention. This 6-week program can improve a teen’s functioning and quality of living socially, physically and psychologically.
