Mission Statement

Our mission is to connect young people to the wonder and science of the natural world, igniting self-discovery and inspiring stewardship of our planet. Through our overnight, hands-on environmental science programs, we take more than 30,000 students each year into our national parks to explore the outdoors, connect with their peers, discover themselves and develop a lasting relationship with the environment.

About This Cause

National Parks—Yosemite, Golden Gate, Olympic, and Prince William Forest Park—these are our classrooms. We are the National Park Service’s largest partner in overnight outdoor environmental education. Over the course of our 54-year partnership, our programs have reached more than 1.6 million students and teachers, changing lives along the way. NatureBridge provides programs in some of the most stunning places on the planet and reaches more than 30,000 students and teachers each year. CHANGING LIVES We offer more than an outdoor classroom. Through inquiry-based environmental science education, our students build critical thinking skills, knowledge, and self-esteem. Students are challenged to see their world in a new way. They conduct scientific research that drives more informed choices and gives them a stronger understanding of our interconnections with the natural world. At NatureBridge, young people from all backgrounds learn that the world is larger than themselves and that they are powerful enough to change it. We inspire future leaders and the stewards of tomorrow. We do more than teach. We reach. By providing scholarships to nearly 35% of our schools, we are able to reach many students from underserved communities. We adapt our programs and our curricula to fit every student’s needs, abilities, and background. Every young person is engaged and involved. No one is left out. And we work with teachers so lessons learned outdoors will continue in the classroom and back home in students’ communities. And we are built to last. Powered by a combination of earned revenue and philanthropic support, we are highly sustainable and adaptable. We are committed to growing and improving overnight environmental education for America’s young people. In 2024, we opened the National Environmental Science Center in Yosemite as a place for students around the country to continue to explore and learn about a world heritage site. FOR OUR STUDENTS, OUR COMMUNITIES, AND THE PLANET We must do more to prepare our students to address the environmental challenges we face, for success in the workforce, and the economy of tomorrow. Environmental science education is more important now than ever before. With the world’s changing climate, threats to our plants and animals and the wild places they live, declines in civic engagement and science in the classroom, and a generation bound only to textbooks and technology—NatureBridge’s mission has never been more urgent. BRIDGING THE GAP Our programs are the bridge to new learning opportunities that enhance scientific skills and change lives. • More than 80% of NatureBridge schools return every year and actively integrate our programs into their academic cultures and curricula • Nearly 35% of participating schools need and receive partial or full financial assistance Our curricula aligns with state and federal standards (such as NGSS) and incorporates many subjects including earth and marine science, watershed ecology, geology, climate change, and local cultural history. All NatureBridge programs are guided by our Theory of Change framework, which supports multiple learning styles, builds academic, social, and emotional skills, and: • provides a sense of place by bridging the national parks campuses, the classroom, and students’ home environments. • creates lasting connections by teaching K-12 students that science can open the door to understanding nature and appreciating their many connections to the natural world and to each other. • builds stewardship by empowering youth to take positive action to protect, conserve, and improve the environment. COMMITTED TO GROWTH AND DIVERSITY We continue to establish NatureBridge programs in more outdoor spaces, to reach more students, and to serve more people who face barriers to access these experiences. We are committed to serving a diverse group of people from all economic, social, and ethnic groups. Everyone must feel welcome in our national parks, and everyone must see their own heritage reflected in the stories and meanings interpreted by our staff. We’ll continue to expand our reach by building on a curriculum that is relevant to diverse audiences, and by providing more need-based scholarships. JOIN US We connect today’s young people to nature, so that tomorrow’s adults will be passionate stewards for the natural world. Our future depends on it. Will you join us?
