Mission Statement
Chinese Newcomers Service Center (CNSC) provides multilingual services that help and support Chinese Immigrants adapt to life in the United States. CNSC's mission is to serve as a bridge between the two cultures: enhancing the physical, mental, social, vocation, educational, and economic well being of immigrants, thus facilitating their effort to become self sufficient, contributing members of the community. For the past 45 years, CNSC has effectively assisted low-income Chinese newcomers and immigrant families in navigating the complex social service systems and providing assistance as they begin their new lives in the United States. Since 1969, CNSC has been a key provider for the large Chinese immigrant community by offering the critical "safety net" of services to immigrant families. Most of our participants are monolingual, recent immigrants, of low socioeconomic status, and historically underserve. Many have no education in English or in their native language
About This Cause
Chinese Newcomers Service Center (CNSC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (Tax ID # 94-2152893) that provides services to new immigrants to help them to be self-supporting and vibrant citizens in America for the past 45 years (1969). While serving over 20,000 requests for assistance over the year, CNSC recognizes that the most important service CNSC can provide is to get them ready for jobs and connect them to job opportunities. Over the past two years, despite the lack of grant funding, CNSC has dedicated its efforts to helping unskilled, unemployed low-income immigrants who have no English abilities, computer skills, or work experience in U.S. jobs. Many of these immigrants have lived in San Francisco for several years and have not been able to find any employment since their arrival in the U.S. Some were raised in the rural communities and have never received any formal educated even in their own native language. These non-English speaking immigrants cannot even apply for a job or participate in job training/certification programs because they lack the minimal English verbal and written skills. Many are not able to enroll in school for extended periods of time due to their family obligations and lack of money for tuition or transportation. CNSC provides bilingual job readiness workshops to prepare job seekers for the work and job interviews. CNSC promotes its workshops in the local Chinese newspapers, radio, and TV media, posting/emailing of bilingual flyers. Staff/volunteers also personally telephone job seekers to let them know about the upcoming workshops and recruitments. These job readiness workshops offered in English, Cantonese, Mandarin include image grooming, interview preparation, mock interviews/feedback, social etiquette, ESL for job seekers, resume writing, basic computer Internet browsing, online job search, and job tips from corporate employees/industrial psychologist/educators. EDD/ CalJOBS online and JOBS NOW have also provided bilingual sessions for our job seekers. CNSC recruits employers (fast-food, vegetable cutting, nursery, manufacturing, etc.) who offer entry-level positions at our Job Recruitment sessions. The employer tells the job applicants the available positions, duties, requirements, wages, benefits, and transportation to the place of work. Job seekers participate in Q&A session about the jobs. Afterwards, the employer invites the interested applicants to complete the application form and the applicant is interviewed on the spot. At most of the job recruitments, more than 50% of the applicants have a chance to be hired within about 3 hours. There is no resume, extended application, or waiting process. One recent employer was so impressed by CNSC’s service that she said: “your suggestion to…. participate in a direct face to face meeting with potential applicants at your facility yielded terrific results today. I came away with extending six job offers in total and the new hires are expected to report to work next Monday August 11 [2014]… Your assistance in reaching out to potential candidates and in such a short turnaround time is impressive and much appreciated. I thank you and your staff again for all your time and effort.” CNSC recruited 14 applicants in less than a week’s notice and only 6 workers were needed for this recruitment. Last year, CNSC served over 20,000 participants by offering bilingual services for the Chinese immigrant community: information and referral, employment counseling and job placement, financial literacy, , a year round tax counseling clinic, and VITA program, money management and asset building workshops, immigrant rights, immigration and naturalization services, translation assistance, free food distribution feeding more than 5,000 people, ESL and life skills classes, basic computer training for adults and elderly. CNSC's major accomplishments include our excellent track record in meeting the goals and objectives of all our grants and contracts. CNSC's LITC (Low Income Taxpayer Clinic), VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), TCE (Tax Counseling for The Elderly) Program served over 2,000 low-income households and elderly taxpayers a year, recovering over $2 million in tax refunds.. CNSC collaborated in the Citywide Naturalization Project, a network including Spanish-speaking, Russian, Southeast Asian and Chinese agencies. CNSC is part of HelpLink, multi-lingual information and referral services organized by Northern California Community Services. CNSC serves on various advisory committees, including the Chinese Community Health Summit, the San Francisco City College in Chinatown, the Northeast Resource Center for Senior and Adults with Disabilities, Asian Pacific Islander (API) Community Partnership, and API Council. CNSC was one of the first Chinatown agencies to develop a Computer Learning Center in 1998 to "bridge the digital divide" and provide basic computer education to youth, adults, elderly, families and staff of other non-profit agencies. CNSC provides its information and resource in person, over the telephone, in writing, on its Facebook and bilingual website as well in collaboration with other agencies.
