Mission Statement

We provide center-based after-school services to youth and young adults ages 6-22 with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Alameda County. We also provide community based transition services for ID/DD youths ages 18-22, and adult community training services for ID/DD young adults ages 22 and older.

About This Cause

Established in 1972, Ala Costa Centers' programs offer youth with developmental disabilities academic support, enrichment activities, and help developing both independence and self-determination skills that we all, but particularly this underserved population, need to succeed in life. Ala Costa Centers provide services through 2 afterschool programs located in Berkeley, and Alameda, as well as an Adult Transition and an Adult Community Training Programs. Our after-school programs serve youths aged 6-22, and our adult programs serve young adults ages 18 and over. The after-school programs are center-based programs, and the adult programs, which are day programs, are based in the community. Ala Costa strives to create person-centered programs guided by individual choice and interests. We provide a safe space where students try new experiences with confidence and success as they work to find their place in the world. At Ala Costa Centers, we strive to create opportunities for students to develop and explore their interests, practice social skills and build friendships, and to develop a variety of life-skills. Here, participants learn about importance of health, nutrition, and exercise, all while they establish connections with their peers and with supportive adults in a safe and supervised setting. Additionally, our programs emphasize community integration, accessing of community services and resources, self-determination, and development of self-advocacy skills in our clients.
