Mission Statement

United Earth News (UEN) is a groundbreaking information, research, and newsgathering service that will utilize journalism departments and multi-media resources at universities across the United States and around the world to produce news reports on a wide range of cultural, ecological, social, political, and investigative topics. UEF will incentivize student journalists and researchers to strive for excellence by sponsoring national and international journalism awards. Students also gain class credits, work-study jobs, and other benefits. Pulitzer Prize reporter Melvin Claxton wrote: UEF and “Allen Licari is on to something that could help revolutionize journalism. The idea of college and high school students from across America and around the world producing investigative reports for one Internet Network is simply brilliant. The educational, news-gathering, and financial possibilities presented by such a network are limitless. This is a project I would like to see come to fruition and support 100 percent.” It is against a financial backdrop of traditional news outlets and dearth of local and international reporting that we intend to introduce United Earth News. The network, an online aggregation site for college media outlets across the world, will be a revolutionary media model that will provide readers and viewers with a truly unique news product. UEN, by utilizing the newsgathering capabilities of existing college media outlets, will minimize upfront and ongoing operating costs, while at the same time provide reporting by indigenous journalists with a rich understanding of the cultural norms and nuances of the societies they cover. It is truly the best of both worlds.

About This Cause

What do students, environmental education, biodiversity, journalism, and collaborative education projects have in common? United Earth fund. United Earth Fund is a 501(c)(3) I established in 1978. Please let me describe our mission and why it’s important. Our Earth’s ecology and biodiversity are being destroyed, putting the food web and balance of nature in peril. Our civil and human rights are in jeopardy in America and around the globe. UEF’s initiative is designed to change this scenario by using student power to focus on advancing news in these areas and human rights. Pulitzer Prize reporter Melvin Claxton wrote: “Allen Licari is on to something that could help revolutionize journalism. The idea of college and high school students from across America and around the world producing investigative reports for one Internet Network is simply brilliant. The educational, news-gathering, and financial possibilities presented by such a network are limitless. This is a project I would like to see come to fruition and support 100 percent.” UEN will be a news aggregation site that will also initiate global investigations in collaboration with news partners around the world. Because UEN will utilize existing media, start-up and ongoing operational cost will be minimized. Working from an operations center in the United States, a small staff of editors and designers will select, compile and post news stories, commentaries, editorials, and videos made available by news partners. This will establish a sustainable globally distributed student news operation. In addition to filling the gap in local and international reporting, students have ongoing collaborative tasks that advance public awareness, support the creation and management of wildlife refuge projects, and work locally to recycle food to feed hungry people. Students collaborate to build an online local/global calendar of all environmental and human rights groups issues, activities, and events. A resource such as this does not currently exist. It will enable the public to easily find, identify, and stay informed on their areas of concern. EnviroNotice: https://youtu.be/AwPTEqeejIU. Digital technology connects billions of people, so we can get the word out. UEF can spread the message of peace, establish student tasks to protect endangered species, feed the hungry, and expand public awareness. This initiative has the potential to revolutionize public interest reporting and organize students into a sustainable operation supporting freedom of the press, biodiversity, and human rights into the future. United Earth Fund conducted a multi-year pilot project at the University of California, Davis. It was a great success. Students researched, vetted, and produced a United Earth News Radio Environmental Magazine, lending in-depth context to stories and issues. There was no internet, no digital technology, and $6 million a year for satellites to connect universities in all 50 states. The internet changed that--eliminating costs and barriers-- finally making this urgent project viable. Please join in to help us roll out this worthy project aiming at advancing student journalism, public awareness, biodiversity and human rights.
