Mission Statement
The Lupus Foundation of Northern California (LFNC) is Northern California’s only organization focusing on the needs of individuals living with lupus in their everyday lives. With a vision of bridging the gap between life with and life without lupus, LFNC has served northern California since 1978, and has been named a top health nonprofit by Great Nonprofits four years running.
About This Cause
For over 45 years, LFNC has been the only organization in Northern California focused on lupus awareness providing education, services and programs for those living with lupus and their loved ones. Founded in 1978, as the Bay Area Lupus Foundation by Jo Dewhirst, LFNC quickly became a key resource for patients in the area. Among its many services and programs are education classes for patients, medical conferences with continuing education credit for nurses, support groups, and a recently created Lupus Buddy Program that pairs patients based on professionally selected criteria. LFNC serves the geographic area where two of California’s - and the nation’s - most respected lupus research facilities are located: the lupus clinics at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University. Almost 2 million Americans suffer from lupus, more than AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. Yet knowledge about lupus is lacking both among the general public and even the medical provider community. Awareness and advocacy are therefore key parts of LFNC's mission.
