Mission Statement
CORA provides safety, support and healing for individuals who experience abuse in an intimate relationship, and educates the community to break the cycle of domestic violence.
About This Cause
CORA is the only agency in San Mateo County solely dedicated to helping those in our community affected by domestic violence. Using trauma-informed practices, CORA serves an average of over 11,000 individuals, including their children. Programs and services include: 24-Hour Crisis Hotline - The Hotline is available 24-hours a day, 365 days a year for victims and survivors of intimate partner abuse to access information, assistance and connection to further CORA services and other community resources. Emergency Response Program (ERP) - The ERP Program offers immediate, telephone-based crisis counseling to survivors at the scene of 911 intimate partner abuse calls and connects them with further CORA's supportive services. Safe Houses - CORA operates two confidential, safe houses (often referred to as "shelters" in larger society) in San Mateo County, providing shelter and wrap-around support to 28 survivors of intimate partner abuse and their children. Supportive Housing - Supporting Housing provides permanent and transitional housing for survivors and their children for 1-3 years. Family-Centered Mental Health Services - Mental Health Services provide individual, family, and group counseling for survivors of intimate partner abuse and their children. We help participants learn how to cope with their trauma to reduce their trauma symptoms and enhance their sense of well-being. Children's Services - Children's Services help children heal from exposure to intimate partner abuse. Our team uses a trauma-informed approach, which utilizes developmental assessments and parent consultations, transformational art therapy, and early literacy curriculum. Legal Services -- Our Legal Department provides access to CORA attorneys who can assist clients in applying for restraining orders, offer court accompaniment, and help with a wide range of legal matters related to domestic violence. There is also a legal line that provides no-cost legal advice for victims and survivors. Prevention and Education - CORA educates our community on many different intimate partner abuse issues, from the cycle of intimate partner abuse to how to help someone who may be in a violent relationship. We also offer workshops for youth on topics such as preventing teen dating violence. Trained intimate partner abuse educators are available to provide workshops for any group in San Mateo County.
