Mission Statement
Since 1972, CHD’s staff and several hundred volunteers have provided a spectrum of services that support, guide, and educate more than 14,000 at-risk youth, individuals, and families. The understanding gained through its various services continues to create strong communities, even today. CHD has a number of programs, services and partnership initiatives that address a large number of issues facing the community, including wellness, youth leadership, conflict-resolution and parenting skills. To make these initiatives effective, the staff and volunteers work side-by-side at school and community sites, throughout Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The process enables CHD to provide a safe and supportive environment, empower people and promote their positive growth. Center for Human Development, backed by its highly experienced team of volunteers and staff, constantly strives to identify and resolve community problems; thereby creating happy people.
About This Cause
The Center for Human Development (CHD) is working to create healthier and safer East Bay communities in which everyone, especially those confronted with poverty, are able to thrive. CHD’s approach is to provide a spectrum of programs and services that prevent chronic diseases and violence leading to shorter life expectancy. Not only does CHD address the high risk of illness, conflict, and injury experienced by individuals and families, but the agency also focuses on community level strategies designed to address concerns that affect wellness. Center for Human Development offers a multi-layered approach to help people realize their full potential and transform their communities, including: •Enhancing individual decision-making to adopt healthier lifestyles •Building skills to resolve disputes together and encourage inclusion •Reducing inequities that act as barriers to health and well-being •Educating groups and forming coalitions to change community norms •Inspiring leadership, including youth, to influence policy and legislation One of the powerful tools used by the Center for Human Development across its programs and services, to help achieve personal and societal change, is the Tribes Group Process. The approach was developed by CHD in 1972 and is the foundation of all prevention programs for children, teens and adults. Tribes is a highly interactive group process that accelerates learning, problem-solving, decision-making and consensus-building through positive peer cooperation and collaboration. Lives are changed and communities can be transformed when everyone in a small group feels included, valued, supported and unified around a common goal.
