Mission Statement

The mission of Instituto Familiar de la Raza (IFR) is to promote and enhance the health and well-being of Chicanos/Latinos and multicultural/multiracial youth.

About This Cause

Instituto Familiar de la Raza oversees eight unique programs focused on addressing the needs of the Chicano/Latino/Indigena community in San Francisco. Focused on the emerging needs of our community's children, youth, adults, and families, IFR's programming incorporates integrated health concepts across traditional, conventional, and contemporary modalities. Our programs include: Casa Corazon: Casa Corazón grew out of the family resource system movement to ensure that families received a continuum of support and services to enhance the family resilience. In response to the needs of Chicano/Latino families in San Francisco, Instituto Familiar de la Raza and three other organizations established the Chicano/Latino Family Resource System. Sana Sana: The Early Intervention Program provides school-based & pre-school-based mental health consultation services to care providers of children. Sana Sana also provides SPARK community engagement with families with children 0-4 living in San Francisco's HOPE housing. Indigena Health and Wellness Collaborative: It is estimated that there are 10,000-15,000 Yucatec Mayans and other indigena living in San Francisco. The Indigena Health and Wellness Collaborative is a partnership between Instituto Familiar de La Raza and Asociación Mayab that works to improve the health and well-being of Indigena families in San Francisco. La Clinica: La Clínica was Instituto Familiar de la Raza’s first program. As a comprehensive outpatient mental health clinic, La Clínica addresses the social, emotional, and spiritual needs of the Chicano/Latino community utilizing traditional, contemporary, and complementary approaches to community mental health. La Cultura Cura Youth Program: La Cultura Cura offers youth positive alternatives to violence and incarceration through a range of services and cultural arts activities including intensive case management, court advocacy, mental health services and innovative arts programming. La Cultura Cura is noted for providing critical programming for monolingual Spanish-speaking and multicultural Latino youth and their families. Sí a la Vida: Instituto Familiar de la Raza established the first Latino/Chicano-specific HIV program in San Francisco in 1985. Today, Si a la Vida –Integrated HIV Services provides a range of culturally-based services for Latinos at risk of infection, and those living with HIV/AIDS in San Francisco. Si a la Vida also provide services to promote LGBTQ wellness, including programming for LGBTQ+ Latinx youth. Clinical Internship: IFR provides training to emerging Masters-level, doctorate-level, and post-doctorate level interns for work with the Latino community. Roadmap to Peace: This program provides whole-youth engagement within a collective framework of organizations seeking to support high-risk/in-risk youth.
