Family Works provides compassionate, effective, and affordable services that build essential parenting and life skills for people with cognitive disabilities.
About This Cause
Vision: We envision a day when all people with cognitive disabilities can achieve their fullest potential to live independent and fulfilling lives. Need: • 22% of adults living in California have some type of disability Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). • People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been shown to have poorer health and poorer access to health care (Havercamp and Scott 2015). • Children from families with low income have higher prevalence of intellectual/developmental disabilities (Boyle, et al. 2011). • It is estimated that 30-35% of all persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities also have a psychiatric disorder (National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD) n.d.). Family Works’ services to address the need: • Parenting support services enhance each parent’s ability to promote their own and their children’s cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development: o Behavior management and positive discipline (Triple P – Positive Parenting Program) o Stress reduction o Family nutrition and exercise o Financial management and budgeting o Transportation skills • Independent Living Skills motivate individuals to enhance their social skills and their interactions with their families, work environment, and community resources at large: o Employment readiness o Development of social support systems o Health promotion and exercise o Community Access o Mental Health Support Evaluation: Clients receiving parenting and life skills services demonstrate improvement in the following areas: 1. Improved daily functioning. 2. Reduced level of emotional distress. 3. Decreased impact of psychosocial stressors. 4. Increased self-sufficiency & resiliency. 5. Improved parenting/co-parenting skills. 6. Improved emotional regulation. The desired results of Family Works' programs are measured by: • Qualitative feedback from parents, families and individual clients. • Individual Developmental Disability Service Plans are created for all clients, which offer functional skills training necessary to secure a self-sustaining, independent living situation in the community and provide the support necessary to maintain those skills. Individuals typically live alone or with roommates in their own homes or apartments.
