Mission Statement
The mission of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus is to lead by creating extraordinary music and experiences that build community, inspire activism, and foster compassion at home and around the world.
About This Cause
Founded in 1978, the first public performance of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (SFGMC) was at an impromptu memorial service on the steps of City Hall on November 27, 1978, the day that Harvey Milk and George Moscone were assassinated. SFGMC went on to become a major presence in both the choral world and the LGBTQ movement. For more than 40 years, SFGMC has courageously served as the international standard bearer for a powerful and accomplished mix of high-caliber performance, human rights, community activism, empowerment and inclusiveness, establishing it as an icon among LGBTQ organizations. Today, under the leadership of Artistic Director, Dr. Timothy Seelig, the chorus has expanded its membership to over 250 auditioned singing members, and launched major artistic initiatives including new recordings, commissions from major composers, and touring. In 2017, SFGMC embarked on the Lavender Pen Tour of the deep south, which was captured in the award-winning documentary "Gay Chorus Deep South." In 2019, SFGMC purchased a four-story building in the Mission District, its first ever permanent home, now known as the first-ever National LGBTQ Center for the Arts. While our accomplishments have been considerable, our aspirations are ambitious. With your support, we look forward to an incredible future. Thank you in advance for your support of our mission of artistic excellence, community, activism and compassion.
