Mission Statement
The Nova Vista Symphony seeks to educate, empower and improve lives through the exposure to symphonic music, while providing talented non-professional musicians the opportunity to participate in the production of a full symphonic repertoire and giving the public an opportunity to hear symphonic music at an affordable price.
About This Cause
The Nova Vista Symphony is a non-profit orchestra with professional artistic standards. It has continuously provided residents of Santa Clara County with concerts featuring challenging, large-scale orchestral works not typically performed by smaller community orchestras. The size of the orchestra, 60-80 musicians, provides opportunities for many talented, but not professional, local musicians to perform with a top quality orchestra. Four subscription concerts are planned each season, along with a holiday concert usually performed with a local community choir. The orchestra begins rehearsing six weeks before each concert and if funds allow, professional coaches are hired to aid in the preparation of some of the more difficult works. Performances take place at various venues throughout Santa Clara County such as the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, McAfee Center at Saratoga High School and the De Anza Visual and Performing Arts Center. The concerts draw between 180-250 audience members of all ages. The affordable ticket price provides community members who might not otherwise be able to attend a classical music concert an opportunity to experience this type of music. Pre-concert talks are provided by either Maestro Tony Quartuccio or Russel Hancock, President of Joint Venture Silicon Valley and a talented musician in his own right. The talks give the audience a better understanding of the composer and the music they are about to hear. Each year, the orchestra sponsors a Young Artist Competition, inviting musicians from the ages of 13-19 to audition for prize money and a chance to perform with a quality orchestra. These young musicians provide inspiration for other budding musicians and mature players alike. Many of them go on to schools such as Juilliard, SF Conservatory or the Curtis Institute of Music. The orchestra also presents at least one Instrument Petting Zoo at a local library or school. With so few opportunities for children to see and hear musical instruments up close, the performances have been a huge success, drawing more than 100 children and parents. An effort is made to have each instrument of the orchestra represented, with orchestra members telling why they chose the instrument, how long they have played, and performing a brief excerpt so the children can hear what the instrument sounds like. Afterwards, the children are invited to come up and see the instruments up close, and in some cases actually try them out. The orchestra is continually seeking partners throughout the community including other musical organizations and community groups. The orchestra has featured young musicians from the San Jose Senior Youth Chamber Orchestra who sat side-by-side with regular orchestra members and has partnered with the Vivace Youth Chorus and San Jose Symphonic Chorus.
