Mission Statement

DREDF's mission is to advance the civil and human rights of people with disabilities through legal advocacy, training, education, and public policy and legislative development. Our vision is of a just world where all people, with and without disabilities, live full and independent lives free of discrimination. We advance our mission by protecting and advancing the civil and human rights of people with disabilities through legal advocacy, training and education, community organizing, and the development of public policy and legislation. Managed, directed, and governed by people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities, DREDF has promoted inclusion and equal opportunity for people with disabilities for more than 40 years. DREDF has played a leading role in all major U.S. disability legal reforms, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). DREDF utilizes its expertise in grassroots organizing, policy development and reform, and disability law to advance disability rights and support disability communities around the world.

About This Cause

Founded in 1979, the non-profit Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) has been a national leader in protecting children and adults with chronic health conditions and disabilities. An early pioneer in the disability civil rights movement, DREDF is led by a unique alliance of people with disabilities and parents who have children with disabilities. For the past four decades, DREDF has promoted civil and human rights through legal advocacy, public policy and legislative development, training, education, and research. DREDF carries out its work today in offices in Berkeley, California, where the organization is a founding partner of the Ed Roberts Campus, the international disability rights center, and in Washington, DC. Current program priorities provide cross-disability legal and policy defense against harms caused during the COVID-19 crisis that will continue to hit disabled people and their families disproportionately for months, if not years, to come. DREDF will continue to work in coalition with our communities, mutual aid groups, organizational partners, and political allies to provide technical assistance and be a connector of people, expertise, resources, and information. We will continue to unite across community lines and press for change—especially now, by: • Advocating for access and inclusion in all emergency measures in the areas of bioethics, healthcare, communication, shelter, transportation, and in-home supports and services, in both community-based and congregate settings • Ensuring that disabled students' education rights aren't "forgotten" or dismissed as “nonessential” • Pushing—as we always have—for application of the ADA to the digital world so the greatest number of people possible are able to communicate, and cope with any crisis that may arise • Providing legal expertise and technical assistance to intersectional activist and organizational mutual aid groups on issues such as existing nondiscrimination laws and policies, and through Know Your Rights materials In addition to domestic leadership on efforts to achieve US ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, DREDF works with emerging leaders with disabilities and parents who are developing strategies for social change in their countries and locales. Topics include coalition building, issues and goals identification, leadership development, use of media, role of the rule of law, strategies for self empowerment, and potential approaches to legal reforms in light of local and regional circumstances.
