Mission Statement

The mission of the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) is to: Foster and communicate mathematical research in a broad range of fundamental topics and applications, Develop mathematical talent and cultivate a sense of belonging and engagement, and Inspire an appreciation of the power, beauty, and joy of mathematics.

About This Cause

SLMath is one of the world’s preeminent centers for collaborative research in mathematics. A rotating committee of ten renowned mathematical scientists governs the Institute’s scientific program with a vision of the field that is perpetually renewed. A Board of Trustees, composed of accomplished business and academic leaders, oversees the Institute’s strategy, and financial welfare. About 2000 mathematicians come from around the globe each year to spend varying lengths of time at the Berkeley facility; the visitors have included, for example, all the winners of the Fields medal since SLMath’s founding in 1982. The visitors participate in topic-focused research programs in an environment that promotes creativity and the effective interchange of ideas and techniques. In addition to the research programs, SLMath runs many short summer workshops for graduate students and plays an active role in the debates about K-12 mathematics education. It develops and produces public outreach events that are attended by thousands annually, as well as films and videos that are seen by hundreds of thousands. SLMath is supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Security Agency, private and foundation donations, and about 110 Academic Sponsors—premier mathematics departments from around the US and abroad. A research period spent at SLMath is considered to be an important milestone in a mathematician’s career.
