Mission Statement

Provide access to quality health care for families working in the agricultural community in the Monterey Bay region

About This Cause

Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas (CSVS) has a +40-year history as a Community Health Center and since 1989 is designated as a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Our organization is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, public benefit corporation. What is remarkable about Community Health Centers such as CSVS, is that we have enjoyed bipartisan support for our entire history—one of the few areas of health care that can with honesty claim that! The goal of CSVS is to help the individuals we serve get well and stay well so they don’t require more costly emergency and hospital care. Services provided include prevention services, like screenings and immunizations, as well as management of acute and chronic medical conditions. In addition to primary medical care across the lifespan, CSVS also offer access to dental and behavioral health services as well as discounted medications, either on site or through arrangement with a pharmacy. With CSVS’s help, access to quality primary health care for families working in agriculture has improved substantially in Monterey County, California, and we will continue to work to improve access through development of Community Health Centers and other safety net organizations. During the coronavirus pandemic, we have partnered with the agricultural community, public health, the Monterey County Medical Society, academic institutions, and other social and human services organizations, to work to reverse the spread of the virus. We have worked to educate people on the significance of handwashing, physical distancing, and wearing facemasks as the cornerstone of the mitigation strategy that is used to combat the virus. We have initiated efforts to expand SARS-CoV-2 testing, making the tests available in the fields and housing units. CSVS has completed working with UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health on a research project to evaluate infection rates in the agricultural workers using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We have found evidence of current infection in about 13% of 1,091 farmworkers tested for active SARS-CoV-2 infection over the five-month period from July through November 2020. A striking 42% of cases were asymptomatic. We found that seropositivity doubled between July and October reaching nearly 20% and suggesting that 1 in 5 farmworkers had an earlier infection.
