Mission Statement

The mission of the Oakland Police Activities League is to: 1) offer educational and recreational programs that provide a common platform for positive interaction between Oakland's youth and police officers, thereby fostering a mutual bond of respect, understanding, and trust; 2) guide youth toward responsible, mature, and informed citizenship; and 3) encourage principles of good will, friendship, and sportsmanship.

About This Cause

PAL provides a safe haven for youth living in deep East Oakland, a community plagued by high rates of poverty and violent crime. PAL engages local youth in a variety of positive activities and exposes them to caring adults who have the opportunity to shape their priorities and goals for the future. PAL programming is primarily delivered during the after-school hours of 3-6pm, a time when crime among youth is high. PAL operates a police explorers program, a youth leadership council, an after-school program, a police-youth mentoring program, and several sports leagues. By providing a robust portfolio of youth development programs and mentoring opportunities, PAL directly impacts the physical and mental health of youth by reducing their exposure to violence, increasing their connections to caring adults, and developing their hope for the future.
