Mission Statement
The Berkeley Society for the Preservation of Traditional Music (dba: Freight & Salvage) is a nonprofit community arts organization dedicated to promoting public awareness and understanding of traditional music—music that is rooted in and expressive of the great variety of regional, ethnic, and social cultures of peoples throughout the world.
About This Cause
At the Freight & Salvage, we believe traditional music is about community building and connection – with our history, our understanding of the world, the divine, and one another. For generations, traditional music has been passed down around campfires, on front porches, in fields, and in sacred spaces. But in today’s fast paced world, there are too few opportunities for people to gather, share traditions and build community through music. For the past fifty years, the Freight has provided that gathering space and has been a home for traditional music and musicians. Established in 1968, the Freight & Salvage is the longest running traditional music venue West of the Mississippi. Founded at the height of the civil rights and anti-war movements, the Freight is deeply rooted in those aspects of Berkeley’s culture that embrace freedom, justice, cooperation, and innovation. Recognizing the Freight’s leadership role in the community, the City of Berkeley helped us purchase our current location in the Downtown Arts District, where we opened our venue in 2009. Since then, our ticket sales have grown from 30,000 in 2008 to over 80,000 in 2018. Programming today includes over 340 concerts and more than 275 classes and workshops annually, serving all ages.
