Mission Statement
Ensuring the independence and dignity of seniors by protecting their legal rights through education, counseling, and advocacy.
About This Cause
LAS is an Oakland-based nonprofit that provides free legal, educational, and health insurance counseling services to seniors throughout Alameda County. Our vision is that all seniors will be able to live safely, with dignity, and the greatest possible independence regardless of their economic, social or health circumstances. Through our community centered service delivery model, clients are able to access services in the places where they live and spend time. Services are offered at senior centers, senior living facilities and for our legal practice, in the homes of older adults. This approach means that an older adult will never be denied LAS’ services because of physical or mental impairment, limited financial resources, limited access to transportation, or language barriers. LAS’ Legal Services Program addresses issues of elder abuse, housing, guardianship of minor children, public benefits, health law and immigration. By offering legal interventions that are targeted at protecting seniors’ most basic rights, our highly experienced attorneys provide critical interventions to address issues of safety and security. LAS’ Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) is the only resource in the county providing free, unbiased advice and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries. State-registered volunteer HICAP counselors provide individual counseling to Medicare beneficiaries of any age and help clients choose supplemental coverage, provide information on ways to save money on Medicare costs, and screen for denials of coverage that may be appealed. Counseling is provided at various sites throughout Alameda County including senior centers, clinics, and Social Security offices. LAS’ community education program arms seniors and service providers with the knowledge they need to successfully navigate the complex systems seniors rely on to thrive in their community. The program provides hundreds of free presentations across Alameda County on a variety of topics, including housing rights, advance health care directives, and long-term care insurance. LAS also hosts an annual conference on elder abuse designed to provide the latest tools and interventions to detect and prevent elder abuse to a wide range of service providers.
