Mission Statement
The American Himalayan Foundation supports vital education, health care, and cultural and environmental preservation throughout the Himalayan region. AHF also helps Tibetan refugees with their struggle to survive and maintain their culture.
About This Cause
Since the American Himalayan Foundation was established in 1981, our work has been guided by deep respect for the people and cultures of the Himalaya. Rather than prescribe solutions from afar, we seek out local change-makers: visionary individuals and organizations working to address their community’s specific needs and support them in furthering that work. We always partner with local people; they understand their communities best. Our projects often start small, filling specific needs, and then grow to give our partners the kind of support they need to expand their capacity and achieve lasting impact in their communities. By developing and leveraging these partnerships, we are able to contribute to positive change without compromising either efficiency or community engagement, something we are proud of. With a staff of seven at our headquarters in San Francisco and seven more at our regional office in Kathmandu, we are a nimble organization with deep roots in the Himalaya, able to respond with speed and flexibility to developments in the communities we work with and to make the long-term commitments necessary for real, sustainable change. In our earliest days we partnered with Sir Edmund Hillary and the Himalayan Trust to fund schools and hospitals for Sherpas in the Everest area. And we still do that. Over the following three decades, we expanded our scope and now reach 350,000 Nepalis, Sherpas, and Tibetans in need every year – most of whom would otherwise have nowhere to turn for support. Our work focuses on education, health care, cultural preservation and care for the most vulnerable, but many of our larger projects are integrated and cover more than one focus area. Our work with Tibetan refugees in Nepal and India is a good example of this integration. We support health clinics in refugee camps, fund elder homes so that Tibetan elders can enjoy comfort and dignity after a difficult life in exile, provide small loans to help refugee settlements start businesses and generate income, and offer young Tibetan refugees a path to education, from daycare through college, so they can access all the opportunities a modern education offers without sacrificing their cultural identity. Whether helping disabled children walk, preventing young girls from being sold into slavery, building clean water systems in remote villages in Tibet or restoring fifteenth-century monasteries, AHF supports programs and projects that directly benefit people in the Himalaya and have the kind of impact that improves their lives over the long term, through strategic and technical assistance and funding.
