Since 1909, Samuel Merritt University (SMU) has prepared healthcare professionals to make a positive impact in their communities. Samuel Merritt University is a health sciences institution offering high-quality instruction, outstanding faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities. We have a deep commitment and proven track record of preparing professionals to address today’s healthcare needs. SMU is an integral part of patient care in Northern California. We’re one of the largest educators of registered nurses in California, and many of the physical and occupational therapists, physician assistants, and podiatric physicians who provide care in the region are graduates of our programs. With campuses in Oakland, Sacramento, San Mateo, and Fresno, SMU's enrollment is approximately 2,050. 35% of our students are Asian, 27% are white, 18% are Latinx, 7.2% are African American, 6.6% are 2+races, 4.8% are unknown, .8% are Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and .2 % are American Indian/Alaskan. First in their family to attend college account for 30% and 18% of our students have children. SMU has a 95% first year retention rate; our average graduation rate for the past three years is 94%, and the licensure pass rates for first time takers range from 80% to 100%, depending on the degree program.
