Mission Statement

Rebuilding Together Peninsula (RTP) builds volunteer partnerships to rehabilitate homes and community facilities for low-income homeowners and nonprofit centers throughout San Mateo County and Northern Santa Clara County.

About This Cause

RTP envisions a Safe and Healthy Home for every person, with repair programs serving seniors, people with disabilities and families with children in a service area with a total population well over 1 million. RTP’s free repair services ensure that our neighbors in need can live in warmth, safety and independence in their own homes. RTP’s efforts are strengthened by partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, private businesses, skilled craftspeople, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers. Every year, RTP brings thousands of volunteers and corporate sponsors together to preserve affordable housing and rebuild communities. RTP facilitates neighbors helping neighbors, enhancing dignity and pride for all who participate. Homeowners do not pay for the repairs provided by RTP. Businesses, service and religious organizations and foundations sponsor our projects. They contribute both financial support to cover the average costs of materials and supplies and the volunteers to work the projects. A “Construction Captain” skilled in home repair coordinates the repair work and assists with the site inspection, evaluation, material purchasing and volunteer assignments. A “Volunteer Captain” recruits and organizes the volunteers for each rehabilitation site becoming acquainted with the homeowner and assisting the Construction Captain in planning and implementing the work. Homeowners, their friends and families and individual community volunteers augment the core group of helpers. Additional skilled labor volunteers are assigned to sites as needed. RTP is able to leverage the value of contributions due to the enormous amount of volunteer labor we receive, along with the extensive quantity of discounted and donated materials provided to our program. Donations of material and skilled labor allow us to multiply each $1 contributed into $5 worth of renovations. The average market value of an RTP home renovation is $15,000; the average market value of an RTP community facility renovation is $50,000. RTP invests 80% of contributions into programs with the remainder going towards administrative expenses. RTP’s repair services ensure long-term warmth, safety and independence for the homeowners we serve. In keeping with our mission, RTP volunteers assess home repair priorities as well as available skills, materials and professional resources to determine an appropriate and unique scope of work for each recipient. Volunteers may repair or upgrade electrical systems, install or repair heating systems, install low-maintenance landscaping and haul debris, create disability access (ramps, widen doorways), replace doors, install fencing, paint interiors and exteriors, fix leaky faucets or replace non-working plumbing, install grab-bars and railings for elderly residents, repair or replace windows, and improve or install lighting for safety. National Rebuilding Day - National Rebuilding Day always occurs the last Saturday of April. It is the culmination of a year’s worth of planning that brings together 3000 volunteers to rebuild and restore the homes of low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities. Our partners include corporations, service leagues, community agencies, foundations, volunteer groups, hospital districts, municipalities, and individual donors. From landscaping to complete renovations, NRD revitalizes communities and helps individuals live independently in warmth and safety.
