Mission Statement
The Daily Californian, an exemplary student newspaper, plays a role in the democratic process by disseminating salient news and information to the campus and surrounding communities. In doing so, it keeps its readers informed, holds local institutions to standards of accountability and transparency, and fosters the next generation of leaders. This independent, student-run news publication prepares students for future careers in journalism, media and other professions by giving them hands-on experience working within an independent, cutting-edge and financially viable news outlet.
About This Cause
Established in 1991, The Daily Californian Education Foundation supports student journalism and newspaper management training at the University of California, Berkeley. No journalism major is offered to undergraduates at UC Berkeley, leaving The Daily Californian to fill the training void. Because The Daily Californian is one of only a handful of student-run newspapers to operate independently of the university that it covers, the nonprofit corporation that publishes the paper is funded entirely by advertising revenues generated by a student sales staff and contributions from alumni and community members. Historically, the Education Foundation’s support of the Daily Cal has included scholarships, funding for training opportunities, and assistance with major capital upgrades, such as computers for the newsroom and photo equipment. As advertising revenue has declined with the economy, the role of the Education Foundation has expanded. Advertising revenue alone cannot meet the needs of educating the—on average—260 students each year at the Daily Cal. The Daily Californian is the only student-run paper in the nation to have a nonprofit foundation supporting its training mission. The Daily Californian Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization completely independent of the University of California. All contributions to the foundation are tax-deductible. Donations to Education Foundation are strictly earmarked for student training purposes, which include ongoing professional guidance, scholarships for student staff members, and equipment to support the Daily Cal’s core mission to prepare the students for careers in journalism or related fields. It has no influence, however, upon editorial content or policy. Recent contributions to the Education Foundation were vital in replacing failing computer equipment with top-of-the-line iMacs for the newsroom. Other contributions have funded conference fees and equipment purchases for the photography department. The Education Foundation also grants scholarships to high-achieving Daily Cal student employees every year. In other words, it’s donations to the Education Foundation that allow Cal student staffers the opportunity of gaining daily metro news experience.
