Mission Statement
The mission of Emergency Food Network is to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply, so that no person goes hungry.
About This Cause
Emergency Food Network (EFN) is Pierce County, Washington’s nonprofit food distributor, with a mission to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply, so that no person goes hungry. EFN partners with a network of over 75 food pantries, meal sites, and shelters, supplying them with more than one million pounds of food each month, at no cost to them. This food comes from a variety of sources, including donations, government programs, produce grown at EFN’s Mother Earth Farm, and our Co-op Food Purchasing Program. Through our partners, we serve the entire Pierce County area, including dense urban cores and isolated rural communities alike. EFN believes that every person in Pierce County should have the food they need not just to survive, but to thrive. Originally designed to meet a temporary need caused by the economic recession of the 1980s, it became apparent in the early 1990s that the need for emergency food was not temporary. In response, EFN became an independent 501©(3) nonprofit organization in 1991. In the years since, EFN has grown from serving four food programs to serving more than 75 food pantries, meal sites, and shelters with more than 12 million pounds of food annually. In order to provide our partners with an adequate food supply, EFN does the following: •Collects, stores, and distributes 12-15 million pounds annually of donated, purchased, and government food at our Lakewood Distribution Center. •Purchases over 1 million pounds annually of staple food, such as rice, pasta, lean proteins, and canned fruits and vegetables through our Co-op Food Purchasing Program. •Grows over 100 varieties of fruit and vegetables using organic practices at our eight-acre Mother Earth Farm. •Repackages more than 925,000 pounds of donated and purchased bulk food into family-sized bags through our Repack Project. •Distributes 2,000 bags of food to students receiving free and reduced-cost lunch each Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break through our Break Bag Program, a total of 6,000 bags per year. •Delivers fresh and nonperishable food each week to over 250 families and individuals facing barriers to food access through our Home Delivery Program. EFN accomplishes all this with 26 year-round staff members, a 13-member Board of Directors, and support from more than 2,000 volunteers each year.
