Mission Statement
Q Youth Resources is the only agency in Kitsap County whose mission is to serve LGBTQ and allied youth in Kitsap County. We serve these youth through the operation of The Q Center, which provides a weekly drop-in program, field trips, mentorship, and youth leadership programs.
About This Cause
Q Youth Resources (QYR) is the only agency in Kitsap County that exclusively serves LGBTQ youth and their allies ages 13-20. It is our mission to empower LGBTQ youth to make informed choices and lead healthy lives. We began as a party of the Kitsap County HIV AIDS Foundation in 2007. After KCHAF closed, through the dedication of our volunteers and one staff member, we completely rebuilt our donor base and fundraising structure to maintain financial stability. Today, we are a completely volunteer-run organization. In 2015 we served over 600 individual youth. The Q Center is our largest program, that reaches the majority of the youth that QYR serves. Every Friday, from 6pm-10pm, we operate The Q Center, a space for youth to be who they are with their peers, interact with positive adult role models, and partake in a variety of structured activities. We partner with local organizations such as Planned Parenthood’s Teen Council Program, to provide educational workshops for our youth on topics like healthy relationships, queer-inclusive sexual health and safer sex practices, as well as issues specific to our population, like gender identity. Our adult-facilitators lead craft activities like knitting circles, tie-dye workshops, and scrapbooking. Because of the adversity that many LGBTQ youth face at school, home, and in the community, having this one reliable place to come to every week means that they know there will always be people who they can rely on to be supportive and accepting of them. We also operate a hugely successful annual event called Pink Prom. Pink prom is an opportunity for youth to experience a prom that they can attend with the date of their choice, and know that they will be accepted and celebrated by everyone in attendance. Pink Prom is an event that is affordable to all youth, as admission is only $5, and is waived for any youth who cannot pay. This event costs thousands of dollars to host every year, and the cost is alleviated by donations of food, drinks, entertainment and decorations. We had over 300 youth attend pink prom in 2015.
