Mission Statement
The Marsh develops new performance. It encourages and supports all stages of this development by providing artists and students of all ages with an intimate performance venue that encourages experimentation by giving audiences a place to see work on the cutting edge of creativity. Founded in 1989 by Stephanie Weisman, The Marsh has lived up to its moniker as a breeding ground for new performance and has grown into one of the Bay Area's most visible and highly respected performance venues. The Marsh cemented its future by purchasing its Valencia Street building in 1996. It presents 600 performances each year between its San Francisco and Berkeley venues. The Marsh also has a year round theater-arts youth onsite and school program where no child is turned away because of financial need. Our vision gives artists the venue and tools to develop their "voice." At The Marsh, the First Amendment is a living practice, supporting freedom of speech by finding a way to say yes to the stories of our times.
