Mission Statement
Based in Oakland, Youth ALIVE! believes that urban youth have the innate capacity to stop the violence plaguing our communities. Every day, we nurture leadership and life skills of young people affected by violence because addressing the root causes of violence saves lives.
About This Cause
Youth ALIVE! works to prevent violence through five distinct programs. Caught in the Crossfire (CiC) is a hospital-based peer violence intervention program for youth that works with wounded youth to reduce retaliation, re-injury and involvement in the criminal justice system. The Khadafy Washington Project, named after the murdered 18-year old son of the program’s founder, provides emotional and practical support to families immediately after a young person has been killed, in order to prevent retaliation and engage the community in sending a message that the violence must stop. Teens on Target (TNT), our violence prevention peer education program, trains high school students to be peer educators and leaders, who in turn present violence prevention workshops and assemblies each year to hundreds Oakland youth living in communities with high levels of violence. This approach is highly effective because it uses high school peer educators as teachers and mentors. Intervention specialists in our Pathways program support youth transitioning out of the justice system or struggling academically. Youth ALIVE!'s team of violence interrupters intervene in and mediate conflicts between groups, gangs and individuals before they escalate to further violence. All clients have access to Youth ALIVE!'s trauma-informed, professional counseling services.
