Zen Caregiving Project

Mission Statement

Our mission is to enhance the experience of care for caregivers and care recipients, and to inspire each other to live fully in the face of the universal experience of loss. We do this through teaching mindfulness and compassion as practical tools to improve well-being, and by using conversation to bring loss out into the open.

About This Cause

“Caregiving often calls us to lean into love we didn’t know possible.” Tia Walker, from The Inspired Caregiver

Zen Caregiving Project, formally the Zen Hospice Project, is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, California with over 30 years experience in practicing and teaching mindfulness-based, compassionate caregiving.

We offer three programs, all related to compassionate caregiving and all which support those carrying out the very human yet often very demanding role of caring for others in need.

The first program is our Mindful Caregiving Education program, which helps build the emotional resilience of professional, clinical and family caregivers, and teaches them how to work skillfully with stress and loss. Our courses provide a space in which caregivers can stop and reflect on the demanding work they do, build compassion towards themselves and build an emotionally sustainable approach to their role and work.

The second program is our Volunteer Caregiving Program, in which we train volunteers in skills grounded in mindfulness and compassion to serve people who are chronically ill or dying. Our volunteer program at Laguna Honda Hospital, in San Francisco, is one of the longest continuously running volunteer hospice and palliative care programs in the country and is funded entirely through donations.

And finally, we create workshops and events to bring the topics of loss and death into the open, providing a safe space in which people can explore the areas that we often don’t dare to face.

Your donation would help us to reach more people in need, particularly subsidizing those who can’t afford to pay even modest prices for support. We are also expanding our volunteer program so that we can serve more people who are approaching the end of their lives.

We hope that you feel moved to follow us and support our cause - providing these services to all who need them. Thank you for your generosity.
