Mission Statement
Our organization serves youth ages 10-21 in acquiring the fundamentals of aviation and aerodynamics and the applied mathematics and engineering that drive them. While open to all youth, we're working to increase STEAM exposure to underserved youth (low income, youth of color, female, LGBTQ+, youth with disabilities). Our major commitment is to stay with our families from their first engagement through completing their education and beginning their careers. Youth are introduced to aeronautics, aircraft building, commercial space & solar system related careers, drones and robotics.
About This Cause
Airway Science for Kids, Inc. (ASK) was founded in 1992 by Bob Strickland, a retired Air Force auditor and aeronautics enthusiast passionate about working with Portland’s hard-to-reach youth. For 30 years, ASK has served the Black community in Portland and other historically underrepresented youth. We are now in Portland, Hillsboro, and Vancouver, WA. Airway Science serves BIPOC (65% of participants), LGBTQ+ (15%), youth identifying as women (40%), individuals with disabilities (20%), living in low-income homes (80%), and youth in foster care. Our organization has been in Portland for 30 years, with a recent expansion into Vancouver, Washington. We reach over 4000 individuals each year, and no qualified student pays for our programs. At Airways Science for Kids, our youth fly drones and flight simulators, learn about robotics, commercial space travel, and living in the solar system. As youth enter high school, our Aerospace College & Career Exploration & Selection System (ACCESS) provides an opportunity to learn about a variety of aerospace careers and choose which careers they want to learn more about. From Private Pilot Ground School to our TeenFlight airplane build program, youth are offered unique opportunities to learn more about the careers that interest them. Upon completing ACCESS students continue to develop real world skills and are matched to relevant mentors, work experiences, and internships.
