Mission Statement
Biotech Partners provides underrepresented youth in life sciences with personal, academic and professional development experiences that increase participation in higher education and access to fulfilling science careers.
About This Cause
Founded in 1993, Biotech Partners' programming improves student proficiency in STEM and increases the number of students that pursue STEM careers through a unique four-year Career Technical Education (CTE) program in biotechnology (two years in Biotech Partners' high school Biotech Academy and two years in Biotech Partners' Bioscience Career Institute (BCI) community college certification). Biotech Partners serves approximately 370 students annually. The program targets students from populations underrepresented in the biotechnology industry (e.g. low income) and provides rigorous hands-on and lab-based biotechnology coursework, job readiness/soft skills training, tutoring, personal and emotional support, and paid internships in professional science settings (eight summer weeks for rising high school seniors and year-round for community college students). During internships, mentor-supervisors work with students, providing specific technical training and more general job readiness to help students feel confident in laboratory and professional settings to which very few young people have access, particularly Biotech Partners low-income students. Biotech Partners currently offers two-year high school Biotech Academies at Berkeley High, Oakland Tech, Antioch High, and San Marin High (Novato). Upon graduation from high school, students elect to enter the Bioscience Career Institute (BCI) through enrollment within the Peralta Community College District or a 4-year institution of higher education. Outcomes of the Biotech Partners program include: - 100% high school graduation rate; - 100% college enrollment; and - 100% job placement for certified students seeking biotech employment. Biotech Partners is continuing to expand its Biotech Academy to other Greater Bay Area high schools to guide more under-served youth through high school, into college and science careers.
