OPERATION DIGNITY INC

Oakland, California, 94607 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to create pathways to health and housing for the most vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in our community, with a special focus on veterans and people living in encampments. We help participants reach their housing goals by providing a continuum of service from comprehensive street outreach and shelter to permanent supportive housing. Among our core values are meeting people where they are while cultivating a strong peer community, inclusive of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.

About This Cause

Operation Dignity was founded in Oakland in 1993 by Alex McElree, a formerly homeless Vietnam veteran who got back on his feet and wanted to make sure other veterans had a way to do the same. In the past 30 years our mission has expanded, and although we still serve approximately 250 veterans a year, we also serve approximately 1,750 non-veterans. Our work with veterans now spans 7 sites across Oakland, Alameda, Berkely and San Leandro. Since 2001 we also have been the primary Street Outreach provider for the City of Oakland, helping ALL individuals who are actively experiencing homelessness. In 2017, the City of Oakland also selected us to operate three Community Cabins sites, with a total of 120 beds where any individual coming directly from the streets or an encampment is given temporary shelter while we work to connect them with services and permanent housing.
