Mission Statement
TCC is working to bring Washingtonians more and better transportation choices – real opportunities to take a bus, catch a train, ride a bike, or walk. Our Vision: affordable, walkable, bike-friendly, vibrant communities connected by great transit.
About This Cause
Founded in 1993, Transportation Choices is a policy and advocacy nonprofit dedicated to making transportation accessible to all in Washington State. We pass policies that support more transit, bike, and pedestrian improvements at the state, regional, and local levels. We are leading the way to building a transportation system that connects people to jobs, education, housing, health care, communities, and each other. We bring together a variety of partners from across the state to work toward a common goal—more transportation choices that get you where you need to go. We are committed to centering equity in our work. We improve transportation access and opportunity for all when we focus on the outcomes for low-income people, people of color, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities. Our Priorities: > Pass policies that increase transit service, reduce carbon emissions, and foster healthy and thriving communities. Monitor the implementation of passed policies to ensure accountability and equitable outcomes. > Increase funding for transit, bike, and pedestrian infrastructure through advocacy that organizes communities to champion more transportation choices. > Build intersectional coalitions that bring together business, labor, social justice, environmental, health, and transportation advocates to win policies and funding. > Enhance public awareness and support for transit, bike, and pedestrian choices through our education partnerships with businesses, universities, neighborhoods, and other community organizations. > Urge the development of racial and social equity programs and tools at agencies and governments to help them center and evaluate equity within their work. Recent Accomplishments: In early 2022, after years of coalition-building and advocacy from Transportation Choices and our partners, the State Legislature passed Move Ahead Washington, a 16-year transportation package that invests $5.2 billion in reducing emissions and decarbonizing the transportation sector — a historic priority shift in terms of both dollars committed (for the first time ever more money is going to multimodal solutions than to new highways), and the proportion of funding for walking, biking, and transit in our State’s transportation budget. This was a huge win — lifting transit funding from a meager 4% of the overall transportation budget up to 20%, but even so, we are only meeting 17% of the identified need for statewide transit funding. We have a long way to go on this push, to make sure all Washingtonians have access to affordable and plentiful transportation options to get where they need to go. Move Ahead Washington also provides funds for every transit system in the state to go fare-free for riders 18 and under across all transit modes: buses, light rail, ferries, and even Amtrak. The only program like this in the country, Youth Ride Free creates an immediate benefit to the 1.4 million Washingtonians 18 and under — unprecedented access to opportunity for a new generation of transit riders — and decreased transportation costs for families.
