Mission Statement
At Eastside College Preparatory School we are committed to opening new doors for students historically underrepresented in higher education. Our challenging and engaging curriculum enables students to discover their intellectual strengths, sharpen their academic skills, and embrace new opportunities in a culture of learning that supports the potential of every student to enter and succeed in a four-year college and beyond. Eastside students who are the first in their families to go to college create a ripple effect, changing their own lives, the lives of their families, and the life of their community.
About This Cause
Ever since East Palo Alto’s only high school closed in 1976, all high school students had been bused out of their own community to high schools in neighboring, more affluent communities. Through the placement process, these students were assigned to non-college track classes. The results were dramatic: students from East Palo Alto dropped out of high school at the alarming rate of 65 percent. Of the 35 percent who did graduate, less than 10% enrolled in four-year colleges. Eastside is an independent secondary school founded in 1996 to turn back this tide that each year caused hundreds of young people to see their life choices narrow dramatically. Our approach, requiring extraordinary dedication from both students and faculty, is geared toward a central mission: the enrollment and success of every Eastside graduate in a four-year college or university. To achieve our mission we ask a lot of our students and our faculty. All students sign a contract pledging their dedication to succeed by attending school each day, completing their homework to the best of their abilities, and seeking help as needed. In return, our faculty is committed to teach, encourage, and inspire our students. The school day begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm, and includes tutorial periods during which students can receive one-on-one help from their teachers and tutors. Our three-year college readiness program, summer enrichment program, residential program, and alumni program all provide critical layers of support that enable our students to meet the expectations of our challenging college preparatory curriculum. A culture of mutual respect and admiration has grown up between students and faculty, creating a positive environment in which students become active participants in their own educational and personal growth. Ninety-eight percent of our students will be the first generation in their families to attend colleges. All students attend tuition free, and since Eastside receives no state funding, we rely on generous donors – individuals, foundations, and corporations – whose contributions each year sustain our work. To date Eastside has achieved its mission with complete success: since our first graduating class in 2000, all of our graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges, including Boston College, Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, U.C. Berkeley and Pomona College.
