Mission Statement

Our mission is to help parents and caregivers raise curious, creative, and confident children, starting in the critical first five years of life when the brain is developing rapidly. With unique play-based exhibits, classes, and programs, and help for adults as their children's first teacher, Habitot aims to inspire children’s imaginations and foster lifelong learning. To achieve diversity and equity in those we serve, for over 25 years Habitot has partnered with nonprofit organizations, hospitals, and social service agencies and others to benefit underserved children and families — foster and adoptive children, children in the child welfare system, unhoused families, children with an incarcerated parent, children with disabilities, and many others.

About This Cause

Habitot is on the move! Audience demand for a larger and more accessible space, new and improved exhibits, the addition of a maker space, an expanded art studio and more amenities for families have motivated Habitot’s Board of Directors to launch the Campaign for a "New Place to Grow." A team of committed volunteers, board and staff is actively working toward moving the museum into a larger, stand-alone facility in the next three years. We estimate that it will cost five to seven million dollars. Habitot has raised $1M toward its move-in goal and is actively seeking leadership gifts to complete the Campaign. Please join us in making something great happen for children and families with young children in the East Bay. Meanwhile, Habitot has pivoted to operating as a "Mobile Museum," 2021-24, following, the post-COVID years of mandated closure. Approximately, sixteen full-day pop-up events are presented annually in cities throughout the East Bay and have welcomed thousands of new families for play and learning experiences. Mobilized hands-on exhibits include our modular Waterworks water play exhibit, a Rocket Launcher, magnetic Ball Wall, Imagination Playground blocks, a Baby Ball Pit, and multiple art and maker activity stations. Every event sells out with advance tickets on a sliding scale of $1-40 per family. In 2023, Habitot opened its first indoor space since the pandemic, in a temporary location in Bay Street Emeryville and presenting its "Space Station Experience," Art Studio and Imagination Station maker area. Planning for the 2024 Mobile Museum Tour is underway with a half dozen events already scheduled. Corporate and government supporters have underwritten the Tour.
