Mission Statement

Partners in School Innovation’s mission is to transform teaching and learning in the lowest-performing American public schools so that every student thrives.

About This Cause

Schools that serve large numbers of students of color and English learners are consistently underfunded and often staffed with teachers who have not undergone the professional learning needed to fully meet students’ socio-emotional and academic needs. Because educators do not receive appropriate support, students of color generally do not attend public schools that expect academic excellence, develop students' sense of agency, provide access to strong curriculum, or create welcoming environments that are conducive to learning. Partners in School Innovation (Partners) was founded in 1993 to realize the ideals of the American public education system and eliminate the achievement gap to improve educational outcomes for low-income students of color. Our partner schools typically outperform similar schools in their districts by substantial margins and are able to exit programs for underperforming schools on or ahead of schedule. In 2008, we began implementing an equity-focused, research-based school transformation approach. Until 2017, we implemented the approach on an intensive, school-by-school basis, benefiting more than one million students. But millions more students attend schools that need our support, and our overarching long-term goal is to spread our school transformation approach to these schools. To broaden our impact, we more recently began implementing a more scalable model. We now act primarily as a hub for networks of schools and build educators’ capacity to make systematic improvements and transform their own schools. Additionally, we are in the process of designing online courses around race, class, culture, and power (RCCP) related professional development for educators (e.g., identity, relationship with students, trauma-informed teaching practices). Our online courses aim to build and sustain a national movement to eliminate racial inequities in our schools and create an education system in which all students thrive.
