Mission Statement
Established as a non-profit organization in 1994, the mission of EBI is to support people with disabilities to live on their own, work in competitive employment settings, and become empowered to make choices, take risks, and advocate for the resources they need to live as independently as possible. With 177 full and part-time staff, EBI provides services to more than 350 individuals in Alameda County, California, with autism, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
About This Cause
EBI’s major program components are Supported Living, Independent Living, and Employment Services. Supported Living provides intensive staffing for individuals who, because of physical or behavioral needs, require supervision to live safely in the community; Independent Living teaches adults with disabilities the skills they need – budgeting, shopping, meal preparation, using public transit, etc -- to successfully live on their own; and, Employment Services offers training, job placement; and, on-the-job support to individuals who are motivated to become employed. EBI’s more recently developed California Community Transitions and Assisted Living Waiver programs assist individuals living in nursing homes to return, safely and with support, to affordable, accessible housing in community. One of EBI’s greatest strengths is its steadfast commitment to addressing the unmet needs of adults with disabilities. With progressive, innovative leadership, EBI responds creatively and strategically to a broad range of needs that arise, by, for example, facilitating a support group for individuals at risk of being financially or sexually exploited; contracting with hospice workers to train direct support staff about providing end of life care; or, creating internships in municipal offices to develop access to public sector employment. EBI aggressively pursues start-up monies, private and public funding sources, and individual donations to put in place critically needed resources. EBI staff work collaboratively to address client needs -- understanding the importance of building relationships with clients, family members, employers, health care providers, housing personnel, human service agency staff, and advocates, etc. And while these partnerships have been important to EBI’s ability to provide quality services on a day-to-day basis, these collaborations also increasingly provide opportunities for EBI to access prospective employers, housing developers, and public sector leaders, e.g., whose decisions and actions can lead to positive changes in our clients’ lives. EBI is honored to have been recognized multiple times for its services. A sample of awards includes the Bill Rosenberg Memorial Award, received by EBI from CalTash, an advocacy organization, for “demonstrating outstanding leadership in promoting inclusion of persons with disabilities” and the Betty Hamilton Outstanding Advocacy Award from the Alameda County Developmental Disabilities Council. In 2012, EBI won the Moving Mountains Best Practice Award for its Labor/Management Training and Career Ladder Development Committee and was presented the Oakland Adult and Career Education’s Friends of Adult Education Award by the Alameda Chapter of the California Council for Adult Education. EBI has long been recognized both statewide and nationally for its innovation and leadership in the area of employment services, recently capturing the attention of school districts, community colleges, healthcare managers, public agency administrators, and legislators throughout California for Project SEARCH. Between 2009 and 2013, EBI has received four awards from Project SEARCH International for its successful programs at Children’s Hospital Oakland and the County of Alameda. In 2013, UCLA’s Tarjan Center awarded EBI one of seven grants given statewide for its “Let’s Go Work” employment initiative for transition-age youth and young adults with disabilities. EBI received the Bernie Graf Excellence in Service Award in 2014 for its work with individuals with a wide range of disabilities.
