Mission Statement
Saving the world's coral reefs
About This Cause
Coral reefs around the world are at risk due to local-level threats like overfishing, water pollution and habitat destruction. Now, thanks to rising ocean temperatures, they also have to contend with global-level threats, such as coral bleaching. When these threats combine, it severely compromises the ability for corals to grow, reproduce, and thrive. Today, a startling 75 percent of our coral reefs are threatened, and 27 percent have already been lost. One-third of reef-building corals are considered at risk of extinction. The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has a bold plan to save coral reefs. We combine our cutting-edge science with 25 years’ experience in community-driven conservation to create networks of healthy reefs that can adapt to climate change. CORAL’s Adaptive Reef Networks approach is currently active in the Mesoamerican Region and Hawaiian Islands. Our Adaptive Reef Networks blueprint is designed to be replicable and scalable. We aim to maximize our global impact by inspiring others to follow our Adaptive Reef Networks approach. Our goal is to ensure that at least 45 Adaptive Reef Networks are implemented across the globe by 2045. CORAL recognizes that our best chance to save coral reefs is by collaborating with the people who depend on them for food and income. We use our research to identify places where reducing local stressors will most impact corals’ adaptive capacity. In these locations, we work directly with the communities that rely on reefs to address direct threats like overfishing and water pollution. To accomplish this, we: • Use science to inform solutions at local scales • Build partnerships with stakeholders • Create win-wins for communities and conservation • Ensure that policies support conservation • Establish effective and sustainable local management systems • Share information • Develop and pilot innovative solutions Our Signature Initiatives are designed to each address a pressing reef threat. 1. Healthy Fisheries for Reefs: Addresses the overfishing of herbivorous fish which feed on macroalgae and prevent them from overtaking and smothering corals 2. Clean Water for Reefs: Reduces water pollution from sewage and stormwater, which dump harmful sediments and nutrients on coral reefs 3. Intact Reef Ecosystems Initiative: Prevents the destruction of reef habitat from human activities such as unsustainable tourism
