CHILDREN'S BOOK PROJECT

San Francisco, California, 94110 United States

Mission Statement

The Children’s Book Project gives free books to children who need them for equity in literacy, learning, and life, and free literacy resources to the educators and organizations that serve children. We aim to create a more socially just world by providing free books to under-resourced children. Literacy attainment is directly tied to academic achievement and lifetime outcomes, yet children in economically disadvantaged communities do not have the same access to books as their more affluent peers. The Children’s Book Project is committed to closing the opportunity gap and lifting up our community by raising readers.

About This Cause

It takes a village to raise a reader. Literacy attainment is directly tied to student success through school, graduation, and beyond; however, low literacy rates are prevalent in low income communities because books and educational resources are scarce. Low income families are not able to offer the same literacy development opportunities as their more affluent peers, so children start school behind their more affluent peers and never catch up. We aim to ensure that every child in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area has equitable access to books and the opportunity for literacy development. Since 1992, we have provided nearly 3.2 million free books to advance equity in literacy, learning, and life. Follow us at instagram.com/childrensbookprojectsf/
