Mission Statement
Maya’s Music Therapy Fund provides people with developmental disabilities access to music therapy to facilitate self-expression and build community.
About This Cause
Music therapy is the use of music to restore, maintain and improve people’s emotional, mental and physiological health and well-being. Therapy sessions are carefully structured based on individual clients’ strengths and needs, as well as on their own therapeutic goals. Group sessions stress skills such as taking turns, sharing, assuming leadership, making choices, and working as a group - as well as having fun! Typical activities include singing, playing musical instruments, listening to music, songwriting, discussion of the meaning of lyrics, music improvisation, moving to music, and music-imagery exercises. Activities such as these help participants to improve a wide variety of life skills, including: communication, academic, motor, emotional, and social skills. Since 1989, Maya’s Music Therapy Fund has provided regular music therapy to children, teens, and adults with a wide range of developmental disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Our number of participants has grown remarkably over the last few years to more than 110, mostly as a result of the success of our program for girls with Rett syndrome (established in concert with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Oakland), and the expansion of our newest program at the Ed Roberts Campus ("ERC") at the Ashby BART station in Berkeley.
