Mission Statement
Next Step Learning Center believes in the resilience of the human spirit and in each person's ability to learn, change, and take control over their own lives. At Next Step Learning Center, our mission is to strengthen Oakland families and communities through intensive, personalized tutoring in basic literacy, GED preparation, and also to help the student transition to college and/or the workforce. We define basic literacy as the tools of reading, writing, and computation needed for urban life in the 21st century and beyond. We support each student by providing a caring environment, coupled with a strong support and follow-up system.
About This Cause
Transforming Lives Through Literacy Next Step Learning Center is an adult literacy program serving older youth and adults in Oakland, especially West and Downtown Oakland. Next Step is a California 501c(3) nonprofit organization funded by gifts and grants and enhanced by the volunteer services of over sixty tutors from Oakland and the broader East Bay.
