ELLA BAKER CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Oakland, California, 94601 United States

Mission Statement

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights organizes with Black, Brown, and low-income people to shift resources away from prisons and punishment and towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong.

About This Cause

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is named for Ella Josephine Baker, a hero of the civil rights movement who inspired and guided emerging leaders. Like her, we believe in the power of everyday people to win change. We also believe that what you water grows. For too long we have “watered” punishment and prisons, instead of things that actually help our communities thrive. Our goal is to channel resources and opportunities into communities of color who have been most harmed by the lack of investment and prejudicial policies that have resulted in poverty and incarceration. Founded in 1996 by Van Jones and Diana Frappier, the Ella Baker Center seeks to work alongside other leading organizations and within movements in the way Ella Baker herself did by focusing on building the movement’s strategic capacity to effect change. EBC’s historic achievements include: - Securing the termination of a San Francisco police officer responsible for the killing of Aaron Williams; - Leading the fight to close five of eight abusive youth prisons in California; - Building California’s first statewide network for families of incarcerated youth to advocate for change; - Partnering with the California Teachers Association to defeat Proposition 6, a 2008 ballot initiative that would have increased penalties on “gang-related” felonies and drug crimes, specifically targeting youth, low-income families, and undocumented immigrants; - Jump-starting the green collar jobs movement and passing the federal Green Jobs Act; and - Winning a ban on isolation of youth for the purposes of punishment, coercion, convenience, or retaliation in California’s juvenile justice system.
