Mission Statement
Clarion Performing Arts Center provides education and live performance opportunities by fusing music, poetry, theater and visual art as one organic artistic experience for individuals and communities
About This Cause
Established in 1982 and up to 2016, Clarion was known internationally as a world music store. It had a vast collection of ethnic and folk instruments, specializing in Chinese traditional instruments and the Australian didjeridus. In 1989 World Music at Clarion presented a regular Friday night concert series featuring musicians from the Bay Area and beyond. The series ended in 2005 when proprietor Clara Hsu sold the business in pursuit of her own artistic calling. Clara bought back Clarion in July 2016 and renovated the music store into a performing arts center. During this time Clara met Cynthia Yee, director of Linking Rings, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. After several artistic collaborations Cynthia offered Linking Rings’ non-profit status to Clarion. In August 2019 Linking Rings became Clarion Performing Arts Center. Clarion was the incubator of the San Francisco World Music Festival (2000). It was also the catalyst for guqin master David Wong, director of Tranquil Resonance Studio, who came into contact with the guqin through the World Music Series while studying piano as a child at Clarion. In 2017 Clarion was honored by the City of San Francisco as a Legacy Business. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Clarion continued to find ways to engage the public by producing children's plays, skits and book talks online. Since the beginning of the summer 2022, Clarion maintains an online presence, streaming its many in-person events such as concerts, interviews and open mics for the greater public.
