Mission Statement
Mickaboo is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1996 and serving much of Northern California, with a focus on the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. We are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing companion birds (parrot-type and other commonly domesticated birds) who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered to us.
About This Cause
Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, established in 1996 by an avian veterinary technician in response to people treating unwanted, sick and injured pet birds as "disposable", is the largest companion bird rescue in Northern California. We are a non-profit organization with no paid employees or central facility. We rely on donated funds and volunteers to fulfill our mission. All funds donated are used to help the birds we rescue. Mickaboo spends an average of $40,000 per month on urgent vet care for our foster birds (usually ~500 birds at any one time). Mickaboo provides a multitude of services: • Consultation on avian behavioral issues, to help pet owners avoid surrendering their birds. • Bird care education (basic to advanced), free to all who want to attend, required for potential fosters & adopters (~400 attendees/year) • Accepting surrendered birds that would otherwise go to a shelter • In-home foster care for surrendered birds (over a thousand cared for annually) • Avian vet care for injured or ill birds found in shelters, abandoned at veterinary offices, surrendered and fostered. • Outreach and public relations (via websites, TV and radio interviews, newspaper and blog articles, social media, hosted and attended events, etc.) to highlight the plight of homeless birds and 'adopt rather than buy/breed' message • Adopter recruitment, development, qualification, placement and support.
