About This Cause

Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) is committed to addressing some of the most challenging threats to occupational and environmental health around the world – including exposures to lead, silica and other contaminants. The organization provides technical assistance through partnerships, training, and environmental audit and certification programs, with a commitment to public health tenets, scientific principles and corporate responsibility. OK International is a non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1999 and based in San Francisco. The organization is dedicated to improving global health through innovative strategies to reduce exposures to pollutants in low and middle-income countries. We generally partner with other NGOs or governments to design and implement projects to improve conditions and prevent disease among the most vulnerable. The organization has extensive experience in designing and implementing environmental health and safety programs for both formal and informal sector workplaces. We are uniquely positioned to evaluate and recommend workplace health and safety programs while remaining unbiased and neutral. Our staff are specialists in working in challenging environments in developing countries with project experience in India, China, Nigeria, Vietnam, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kosovo, Cameroon, Peru, Mexico and other countries. The following is a brief description of OK International’s program areas: • Lead Poisoning Prevention and The Global Elimination of Lead Paint • Preventing Silicosis, Tuberculosis (TB) and other lung disease from Silica Dust Exposures in the Workplace • Improving Environmental Controls in Lead Battery Manufacturing and Recycling • Protecting Public Health from Environmental Pollution • Reducing Occupational Exposures and Environmental Contamination from Small-scale Mining We have a successful track record of working collaboratively with local partners to conduct field demonstration projects, publish and disseminate results. This allows us to build local capacity to expand these efforts and to bring attention to often ignored opportunities for disease prevention. In some cases, we have worked closely with National and State level officers from ministries of environment, health and mining to provide them with the skills, knowledge, and experience to further these efforts. In other projects our local NGO partners in many countries around the world have also demonstrated the strength of our capacity building efforts and have proven that our model works by successfully expanding environmental and public health programs in their communities. We have strived to raise awareness to sustainable solutions for disease prevention and environmental health promotion including lead paint elimination, improving environmental infrastructure and legal frameworks, and technical capacity building. We have successfully raised awareness by publishing our results in the scientific literature and through media outreach. In 2014 Occupational Knowledge International received the Social Responsibility Award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association for the development and promotion of practical solutions to occupational environmental health and safety in communities around the world. In 2019 we were recognized for our dedication, extraordinary leadership and commitment to disease elimination and were featuredas part of the Recognizing Excellence Around Champions of Health (REACH) 50, a list recognizing those making critical contributions to the disease elimination agenda.
