Mission Statement

Uniting Pet & Human Research for a Cure®

About This Cause

Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF) is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer by funding research in and increasing public awareness of comparative oncology, the study of naturally occurring cancer in people and pets to help both. Animal Cancer Foundation provides annual grants to research teams composed of veterinary oncologists, human medical oncologists and bench researchers working together to increase the understanding of cancer as a disease to promote promising early-stage cancer research, and to discover novel, breakthrough therapies for people and pets. ACF does not fund research that induces cancer in pets. Through the Canine Cancer Genome Project (CCGP) sponsored by a generous gift from the Blue Buffalo Foundation, ACF is awarding grant funds and materials to map the seven most common canine cancer genomes and to place those datasets in the public domain for use by all cancer researchers. The grant award is expected to be announced Fall 2020. Annual ACF Comparative Oncology Awards are provided to competitively selected, peer-reviewed studies in comparative oncology that will have near-term benefit for pets with cancer, but also increase the understanding of human cancer as a disease. These comparative studies have the potential to unlock new treatment pathways shared particularly by canines (dogs) and people (childhood cancer is an especially similar disease). ACF provides website content for pet parents seeking information about pet cancer and comparative oncology research, and supports the pet cancer parent community with awareness posts on social media, blog post and article content. ACF also provides pet parents a place in which to carry forward their pet's legacy by donating to post memorials on our website. ACF partners with veterinary practices around the country to provide a place for veterinarians, veterinary nurses and technicians and veterinary practice managers and their colleagues to join the research community in the fight against cancer by honoring and/or memorializing community members's pets with note cards designated specifically for this purpose. ACF cards contain information about comparative oncology to help increase public awareness of the similarity between pet and human cancer. ACF does not fund treatment for individual pets with cancer. Other charities do that much better. ACF is a research funder.
