Mission Statement
Our mission is to engage with the community to provide training and tools in order for people to become economically self-sufficient, healthy and safe, civically engaged, connected to each other, and committed to lifelong learning. Monument Impact’s vision is to empower people to build a strong and vibrant quality of life. We offer training and resources that help empower the under-served Monument community to build healthier, more successful lives.
About This Cause
The mission of Monument Impact is to empower individuals to become financially self-sufficient, realize their personal potential and actively contribute to the wellbeing of their community. The success of Monument Impacts’ programs is based on members’ commitment to self-improvement and investment in the community. The Monument Community is comprised largely of low income immigrant families and people of color. The three elementary schools supporting the resident community of more than 30,000 report an average of over 92% children of color, predominantly Hispanic, and over 80% socioeconomically disadvantaged, which statistics reflect the make-up of the general population in this community. There is a large disparity between the demographics of the Monument Community and the rest of Concord. Residents of the Monument Community are generally at the margins of society with limited government resources allocated to assist families, particularly those with limited English language skills, little formal education, or those lacking role models and good information on how to improve their wellbeing. The Michael Chavez Center was founded in 2001 as the Concord Community Economic Development Organization, Inc. (CCEDO) to serve the disproportionate number of low income Spanish speaking individuals and families of Concord’s Monument Community. In 2009, the organization began doing business under the name Michael Chavez Center for Economic Opportunity (Chavez Center), and in 2012 the Chavez Center merged with another nonprofit, Monument Community Partnership, that focused on health needs and civic engagement. Though our name is new, our mission is still the same! We actively engage with the Monument community to provide training and tools in order for people to become economically self-sufficient, healthy and safe, civically engaged, connected to each other, and committed to life-long learning. Our goal is to represent the diversity of our community, the different sizes convey mentoring and training that result in the growth of individuals and the community, the three figures represent our three program areas - economic development, civic engagement, and healthy community. Economic Development embraces three programs: day labor, technology and career development. In 2013 more than 500 people received skills training, at least 93 obtained temporary work, and 72 gained permanent employment! Civic Engagement includes the many ways we work closely with community residents and government to address issues of importance - from bedbugs, to support for domestic violence and trafficking victims, emergency response training, and facilitating a county-wide network for a host of service providers. In 2013 we prepared 540 income tax returns and also provided tutoring and support for 25 high school students working to make college part of their future! Our Healthy Community program has been especially rewarding. Our approach is to "train the trainer" who then serves in the community as a resource. They work with schools, apartment complexes, and other community partners to provide nutrition and cooking classes, physical exercise opportunities such as walking and Zumba, and a community Health Fair that in 2013 served over 1,100 people! Families are getting healthier, especially as they learn about the risks of obesity and diabetes.
