Mission Statement

Regional youth orchestra organization for student musicians ages 6-18, serving San Mateo County and surrounding communities.

About This Cause

The Peninsula Youth Orchestra, founded in 1997, is musical home to over 500 student musicians that comprise four full orchestras plus numerous chamber music ensembles. The primary purpose of the organization is to provide musical and orchestral experience for young musicians, ages 6 to 18, by bringing student instrumentalists together to learn, rehearse, and perform music in an educational setting. The most advanced of our groups, under the direction of Mitchell Sardou Klein, has toured extensively in Australia, Japan, and Europe, and received the prestigious 2000 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming of American Music on Foreign Tour. The organization also maintains three full preparatory orchestras, directed by Sara Salsbury. In 2012 Mrs. Salsbury was inducted into the San Mateo County Women's Hall of Fame, in recognition of her work with young musicians and the contribution of the orchestra to the cultural life of San Mateo County. During the past season, the organization conducted weekly rehearsals, gave 9 major concerts, 2 chamber music recitals, conducted a summer music camp, and conducted an 8-day concert tour of the Czech Republic and Eastern Germany.
