Mission Statement

Hālāwai was established to foster and support a community of individuals who share a common interest in the heritage, culture, history and future of the people of Hawai'i and other Pacific Islands.

About This Cause

The goals of Hālāwai are: (1) to disseminate information on subjects relating to the heritage, culture, history and future of the people of Hawai'i and other Pacific Islands; (2) to promote cultural, educational and networking events and mentoring opportunities in the greater New York area; and (3) to partner with local, Hawaiian and other Pacific Island-based organizations to exchange and share information and ideas and coordinate events and activities relating to the heritage, culture, history and future of the people of Hawai'i and other Pacific Islands. Hālāwai has organized music, hula, and cultural events that include public performances, workshops, and presentations. During the pandemic, Hālāwai organized and hosted the Mauli Ola Virtual Gatherings to bring our in-person events online, for friends and family to enjoy during COVID-19 restrictions. We also taught a Malama Honua curriculum, a program that introduced Hawaiian culture and the importance of caring for the Earth to elementary school students in New York City. In 2016, Hālāwai aided the non-profit Polynesian Voyaging Society with planning for Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūle‘a, to visit New York during its Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, a three year journey sailing across Earth’s oceans to join and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world.
